Year Three and Four
Terms 5 and 6
During terms 5 and 6 the children in years three and four will be focusing on the following topics.
Science.
Work this term will focus on the human body. The children will learn how the skeleton is related to movement and support as well as what happens to the skeleton and muscles as they move. Another area of study will be teeth and eating. We will look at how teeth are related to diet and the importance of dental care. Our studies will be linked to Health Education work in PSHE
I.C.T.
The children will gain knowledge and understanding that computers can simulate real or imaginary situations. They will be introduced to software that they will explore and investigate to understand the processes and complex ideas behind the rules of simulations in everyday life.
Design and Technology
During Term 5 the design, make and evaluate project is called 'Sandwich Snacks.' Children will learn basic food preparation techniques and explore how different combinations of food ingredients can affect taste, appearance and texture. Children will investigate the five food groups which contribute to a healthy, balanced diet and apply this to ideas about how their own sandwich contributes to a healthy diet.
Art
In Term 6 children will be investigating sculpture in public buildings and spaces. They will explore and use shape, form, colour and pattern to make a maquette, or small model of a sculpture. They will have opportunities to compare the ideas and methods used in the work of different sculptors. Out of school, children could choose a nearby area, e.g. a garden or park, and look carefully at its design. This might include the shapes, colours and patterns used.
P.E
In Term 5 children will be given the opportunity to play striking and fielding games using a variety of equipment, promoting team values and strategies. They will continue to develop a range of skills including throwing, catching, batting and stopping the ball. They will become familiar with and use set rules to organise and keep their games going. In Term 6 children will participate in atheletics activities, experimenting with different ways of travelling, throwing and jumping; increasing their awareness of speed, height, distance and accuracy.
R.E
'Religion in our neighbourhood' will enable the children to identify and explore places of worship in the community and develop their understanding of how and why people worship. We will also research the location of places of worship for faiths not represented in the local area. Children could look out for religious buildings they see on their way to school, on car and bus journeys, or on holiday. They could keep a record of what they see to present to the rest of the class.
History
Our final study on invaders and settlers will be about the Vikings. In Term 6 children will use a wide variety of evidence to look at why, how and when the Viking raids began, what it was like to live in Viking society and research what they left behind. At home, children could research the Vikings in books and on the Internet to find interesting information to support the topic.
Geography
In Term 5 we will focus on ways of improving the environment. The children will use the school buildings, grounds and immediate locality to investigate environmental issues, including how people affect the environment, e.g. noise and litter. Children will then explore how and why people seek to manage and sustain environments and identify oppotunities for their own involvement in reducing environmental issues, e.g. recycling
Music
In Term 5 and Term 6 the topic is entitled 'Class Orchestra.' This unit of work will develop children's ability to create, combine and perform rhythmic and melodic material as part of a class performance of a song.
